The AulDelay Vintage Echo Plugin (AUv3) is a versatile audio effect designed for professional use within AU-compatible host applications such as Logic and GarageBand. It offers a nostalgic, vintage-inspired delay sound characterized by its analog-like qualities, making it suitable for users seeking to add warmth and character to their recordings.

Overview

AulDelay serves as a delay effect that departs from the pristine digital delay paradigm, instead emphasizing a retro aesthetic. Its internal architecture incorporates highpass and lowpass filtering, delay time modulation, and compression/limiting to create delay tones reminiscent of classic hardware units. Unlike traditional vintage delays, AulDelay operates in stereo and supports maximum delay times up to 8 seconds, facilitating both creative looping and spacious echo effects.

Parameters

• Active - Enables or disables the effect. When deactivated, the delay repeats remain audible, but the input signal is no longer processed by the delay circuit, akin to the "trails" function found in many hardware units.
• Delay - Adjusts the delay time from 10 milliseconds to 8 seconds. Short delay times combined with modulation can produce chorus and flange effects, while extended times are ideal for looping styles reminiscent of "Frippertronics."
• L : R - Configures the ratio of left to right channel delay times. For example, a 1:1 ratio yields identical delays in both channels at 500ms. Ratios such as 3:4 or 2:3 create rhythmic stereo effects through subtle timing differences between channels.
• Mod - Applies stereo modulation of varying depths (Medium or Deep) to the delayed signal. Setting to Off disables modulation.
• Regen - Controls the feedback level of repeats, up to 100% for continuous, "endless" echo. High regeneration may introduce degradation and a "washed-out" quality, intentionally emulating analog delay characteristics. Internal compression and limiting manage signal buildup, resulting in a sonically distinct, slightly distressed repeat sound at higher settings.
• Tone - Shapes the tonal coloration from Dark through Warm to Bright. Internal lowpass and highpass filters selectively attenuate frequencies to mimic vintage analog delays' frequency response characteristics.
• Mix - Balances the level of delayed signal relative to the dry input; the original input remains audible regardless of mix setting.

This plugin builds upon the earlier AULDELAY module developed by Waverley Instruments for Voltage Modular, refining its features for enhanced versatility. The name "AulDelay" derives from the Scots term "auld," meaning old, connoting its vintage inspiration, and reflects its status as an Audio Units plugin.
